AT&T Expands Access to High Speed Internet in Lawrence County and other Rural and Underserved Areas of Alabama

AT&T is Now Offering Fixed Wireless Internet Service to Rural Portions of 18 States, Including More than 37,000 Locations in Parts of 32 Counties Across Alabama

COURTLAND, Ala., July 19, 2018 – AT&T* Fixed Wireless Internet1 for rural and underserved locations is now available to residents and small businesses in parts of Lawrence County, including Courtland, Mount Hope and Town Creek.

This rollout, now in 18 states, began in 2017. The company now offers Fixed Wireless Internet to over 440,000 locations across 18 states with plans to provide access to over 1.1 million locations by the end of 2020.

“This rural part of Alabama is an incredible place to raise a family and run a business,” said Alabama State Senator Larry Stutts. “We must have a 21st Century infrastructure to keep it that way, and access to high-speed Internet is key. I applaud AT&T for their continued work to enhance high-speed connectivity for residents and businesses in rural Alabama.”

“This is a great day in Lawrence County,” said Lawrence County Commission Chair Mose Jones, Jr. “In today’s world, high-speed connectivity is important, and I’m excited to see the private sector continuing to bring enhanced connectivity to our rural Alabama communities.”

Fixed Wireless Internet service delivers an internet connection with download speeds of at least 10Mbps and upload speeds of at least 1Mbps. The connection comes from a wireless tower to a fixed antenna on a customer’s home or business. This is an efficient way to deliver high-quality, high-speed Internet to customers living in underserved rural areas.

More than 37,000 customer locations in the following 32 Alabama Counties are now eligible for AT&T Fixed Wireless Internet: Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Butler, Calhoun, Chambers, Chilton, Coosa, Cullman, Elmore, Escambia, Franklin, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Morgan, Russell, Shelby, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston.

The towers used to provide this service are connected to AT&T’s network using AT&T fiber optics.  AT&T has nearly 1.7 million strand miles of AT&T fiber optics covering Alabama, which enables the company to offer a wide variety of products and services delivering the high-speed connectivity Alabama businesses and residents need.

“I am thankful for the leadership of our elected officials who work to ensure a pro-consumer business environment and am delighted the rural residents and business owners have access to this innovative technology in parts of Lawrence County,” said Heather Dyar, Lawrence County Administrator.

“AT&T is proud to work with our local, state and federal leadership to provide the connectivity Alabama’s residents and businesses demand,” said AT&T Alabama Regional Director of External and Legislative Affairs Dave Hargrove. “Through this new AT&T service, we are helping close the remaining connectivity gap in our state.”

In addition to Alabama, the service is available to residents and businesses in parts of Arkansas, California, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.
