AT&T Expands Access to High Speed Internet in Lawrence County and other Rural and Underserved Areas of Alabama

AT&T is Now Offering Fixed Wireless Internet Service to Rural Portions of 18 States, Including More than 37,000 Locations in Parts of 32 Counties Across Alabama

COURTLAND, Ala., July 19, 2018 – AT&T* Fixed Wireless Internet1 for rural and underserved locations is now available to residents and small businesses in parts of Lawrence County, including Courtland, Mount Hope and Town Creek.

This rollout, now in 18 states, began in 2017. The company now offers Fixed Wireless Internet to over 440,000 locations across 18 states with plans to provide access to over 1.1 million locations by the end of 2020.

“This rural part of Alabama is an incredible place to raise a family and run a business,” said Alabama State Senator Larry Stutts. “We must have a 21st Century infrastructure to keep it that way, and access to high-speed Internet is key. I applaud AT&T for their continued work to enhance high-speed connectivity for residents and businesses in rural Alabama.”

“This is a great day in Lawrence County,” said Lawrence County Commission Chair Mose Jones, Jr. “In today’s world, high-speed connectivity is important, and I’m excited to see the private sector continuing to bring enhanced connectivity to our rural Alabama communities.”

Fixed Wireless Internet service delivers an internet connection with download speeds of at least 10Mbps and upload speeds of at least 1Mbps. The connection comes from a wireless tower to a fixed antenna on a customer’s home or business. This is an efficient way to deliver high-quality, high-speed Internet to customers living in underserved rural areas.

More than 37,000 customer locations in the following 32 Alabama Counties are now eligible for AT&T Fixed Wireless Internet: Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Blount, Butler, Calhoun, Chambers, Chilton, Coosa, Cullman, Elmore, Escambia, Franklin, Greene, Hale, Jefferson, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Montgomery, Morgan, Russell, Shelby, Sumter, Talladega, Tallapoosa, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Winston.

The towers used to provide this service are connected to AT&T’s network using AT&T fiber optics.  AT&T has nearly 1.7 million strand miles of AT&T fiber optics covering Alabama, which enables the company to offer a wide variety of products and services delivering the high-speed connectivity Alabama businesses and residents need.

“I am thankful for the leadership of our elected officials who work to ensure a pro-consumer business environment and am delighted the rural residents and business owners have access to this innovative technology in parts of Lawrence County,” said Heather Dyar, Lawrence County Administrator.

“AT&T is proud to work with our local, state and federal leadership to provide the connectivity Alabama’s residents and businesses demand,” said AT&T Alabama Regional Director of External and Legislative Affairs Dave Hargrove. “Through this new AT&T service, we are helping close the remaining connectivity gap in our state.”

In addition to Alabama, the service is available to residents and businesses in parts of Arkansas, California, Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

AT&T Contribution to USA School of Computing Provides for Cybersecurity Camp

Posted by AT&T Alabama Team

Efforts to keep local students connected to a positive future got a boost as AT&T contributed $15,250 to the University of South Alabama’s School of Computing. AT&T’s contribution was used to provide support to the 2018 USA School of Computing Cybersecurity and Information Assurance Summer Camp (CIASC), which was held in June at USA’s campus.

The gift was made to USA through AT&T’s Aspire program, with the goal of helping prepare our youth to reach their academic goals. Fifty ninth-grade students from W.P. Davidson High School in Mobile received hands-on experience in cybersecurity through activities, guest speakers and real-world scenario exercises over the course of the five-day camp.

CIASC took place at USA’s School of Computing. Les Barnett, director of the Center for Forensics, Information Technology and Security at USA, said the camp taught students computer programming in an applied fashion. “During the camp, the students developed an application for a computerized device that interacted with the world outside a computer,” said Barnett. “The camp culminated in a contest testing what the students learned about programming by getting their device to navigate through a maze.”

Barnett said AT&T’s generous support of the program allows the School of Computing to continue fostering college-bound students’ interest in the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity. Students had the opportunity to learn programming, cryptography and cyber physical systems as well as participate in discussions about trending topics on safe online behavior. He noted that many career opportunities are available for cybersecurity students including positions with the U.S. Department of Defense, state level Departments of Public Safety, Department of Homeland Security, the National Cyber Security Center, corporations, non-profit organizations and more.

“A culture of continuous learning is a key component to student success,” said Alabama State Senator Vivian Davis Figures. “The University of South Alabama’s cybersecurity camp enables students to gain skills in one of the fastest growing fields in technology today.”

“At AT&T, we are committed to helping people connect with their world and opportunities that make life more fulfilling,” stated Glyn Agnew, AT&T Alabama Regional Director of External and Legislative Affairs. “As the cybersecurity industry continues to grow in Mobile and beyond, we are proud to support USA and their work to positively impact our community and state by helping prepare our youth with skills needed to graduate 21st century career ready."
