AT&T California Release: November 16, 2018
RHONDA JOHNSON NAMED PRESIDENT OF AT&T CALIFORNIA
SAN FRANCISCO – Rhonda Johnson has been named President of AT&T California.
In her new role, Johnson will be responsible for AT&T’s government affairs, public policy, philanthropic, and social engagement initiatives in California. She will direct the company’s state workforce, including more than 33,000 employees and nearly 50,000 retirees.
Johnson succeeds Ken McNeely who served as AT&T California President for more than 13 years and who was recently appointed President – AT&T West overseeing 19 Western states including California. Johnson’s appointment is effective on December 1st.
“With the technology and entertainment industries fueling the Golden State’s economy, this is an amazing time to lead the outstanding team at AT&T California to provide the services that our customers and communities need to be more connected than they ever have been before,” said Johnson. “We have invested more than $7.2 billion in California just in the past three years, and I am committed to continuing AT&T’s long history of job creation, innovation and community engagement in our state.”
“Rhonda is a natural choice because of her combination of regulatory and policy expertise, company experience, and passion for California, which will benefit our customers, employees and policymakers,” said McNeely. “She has a long track record of working with our stakeholders to create and maintain an environment that encourages innovation and investment in California.”
A 30-year veteran of AT&T and its predecessor companies, Johnson has served as AT&T’s Vice President of Regulatory Affairs in California since 2007 and nationally since 2013. In that post, she has managed the company’s policy and regulatory issues before the California Public Utilities Commission in addition to overseeing AT&T’s state level regulatory teams across the country.
Johnson started her career in 1984 with AT&T, then SBC, in Chicago, Illinois. She ultimately became Vice President of Regulatory for SBC Illinois before joining SBC California in 2005.
For AT&T, she has held various management positions in finance, regulatory and policy, playing a major role in issues relating to the Federal Telecommunications Act, as well as state regulation addressing wholesale and retail policy.
Raised on a family farm in Sycamore, Illinois, Johnson graduated with highest honors from the University of Illinois with a degree in Finance. She began her career as a financial analyst at the Federal Reserve Bank in Chicago.
She has been selected for several years as one of San Francisco Business Times’ “Most Influential Women in Business.” She has served on the Board of Meals on Wheels San Francisco. She and her husband, Tony, live on the peninsula and enjoy tennis and hiking along the beautiful California coast.
