Contribution Supports Bootcamps Serving Hundreds of Underserved Youth and Small Businesses in the Bay Area, Central Valley and Central Coast

OAKLAND, August 17, 2017 — AT&T made a $50,000 contribution to the Hack the Hood to support 8 Bootcamps training 225 underserved youth to build websites for real small businesses located in the Bay Area, Central Valley and Central Coast. The contribution is part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s signature philanthropic initiative and financial commitment of $400 million since 2008 to drive innovation in education and promote student success in school and beyond.

“AT&T is proud to support Hack the Hood to help create more opportunities for underserved students, while also helping small businesses in the community,” said Ken McNeely, President, AT&T California. “Through AT&T Aspire, we are investing in students, technology and social innovations to create a capable and diverse workforce that will thrive in the 21st century economy.”

Hack the Hood Bootcamps introduce low-income youth of color to careers in tech by hiring and training them to build websites for real small businesses in their own communities. During the 6-week, full-time program, young people gain valuable hands-on experience, build a portfolio, and learn about opportunities in the tech industry. Small businesses work with a youth developer throughout the program to optimize or create a new website to help grow their business.

“Hack the Hood Bootcamps are helping to prepare future entrepreneurs and strengthen our communities” said Susan Mernit, Chief Executive Officer, Hack the Hood. “AT&T’s support is empowering even more young innovators, who are currently under-represented in tech, to pursue a career and succeed in the innovation economy.”

AT&T presented the contribution during a Hack the Hood Bootcamp graduation ceremony today in Oakland, where more than 40 youth completed the program and were honored by family, friends and civic and community leaders.
