The full potential of SmartCities will be unlocked by the deployment of small cells and the advancement of wireless networks on the path to 5G and beyond. State and city leaders should take appropriate steps - streamlining local permitting, allowing access to public rights of way, and adopting reasonable fee structures - to encourage investment in next-generation infrastructure.
