4G LTE Expansion Will Help Give Customers and First Responders Better Access to Mobile Internet

AT&T customers and FirstNet subscribers in Birmingham and Richland got a big boost in wireless connectivity. We enhanced the area’s 4G LTE coverage to help give customers and first responders faster, more reliable wireless service.

Our investment will help customers get the most out of their mobile devices. With 4G LTE service, customers will experience better network connectivity while streaming videos, sharing on social media or texting family and friends.

By building out our 4G LTE network, we are laying the foundation for 5G, the next advance in network technologies. We’re boosting network speeds and capacity, as we continue to expand the availability and capacity of our network using the latest technology. These upgrades will also benefit public safety and first responders on FirstNet – public safety’s dedicated communications platform.

“We’re excited to see the buildout of new wireless facilities in Birmingham, Richland and across the state to give our first responders the cutting-edge tools they need to serve and protect those who may be in harm’s way,” said Lt. Tom Lampe, bureau chief for the Iowa Department of Public Safety Communications. “We look forward to continuing our work with AT&T to rollout the exclusive FirstNet communications platform in Iowa to help our first responders.”

These new enhancements also brought FirstNet Band 14 spectrum to the area to provide optimal coverage and capacity for first responders. Band 14 is high-quality spectrum provided by the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet Authority). Its signal covers larger geographic areas with less infrastructure to better support rural communities. And, thanks to the specialized capabilities enabled by FirstNet, Public Safety subscribers enjoy the fastest overall experience compared to any commercial network.1

FirstNet is being built with AT&T in a public-private partnership with the FirstNet Authority. It’s designed to help first responders in Iowa and across the country connect to the critical information they need – when they need it – so they can keep themselves and the communities they serve safer.

We’re committed to our networks in Iowa

From 2015 to 2017, we invested nearly $120 million in our Iowa wireless and wired networks. These investments boost reliability, coverage, speed and overall performance for Iowans and their businesses. We continued our investment in Iowa in 2018 and plan to keep upgrading our network throughout 2019.
