We are committed to your safety

The holiday season comes with a lot of good cheer, but also many distractions. AT&T New England wants to drive home the message that we are committed to your safety and remind everyone that distracted driving is never OK.

This month, our team has been out in communities around New England hosting IT CAN WAIT events to inform drivers about the dangers of distracted driving and to encourage them to stay safe on the road.

In Vermont and Massachusetts, we hosted the IT CAN WAIT Virtual Reality Experience that uses state-of-the-art technology to put participants face-to-face with the very real consequences of distracted driving. And in Rhode Island, we marked the 100th IT CAN WAIT high school assembly in the state, reaching more than 30,000 students, culminating a 6-year joint initiative with the Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Kilmartin.

AT&T research has found nearly 9-in-10 people admit to using their smartphone while driving. People are texting from behind the wheel — they’re checking email, accessing social media and even snapping photos. Nearly 4-in-10 people say that distracted driving is a habit. Sadly, this pattern of behavior has had deadly consequences far too many times.

I encourage you to join the nearly 33 million other people who have visited and taken the pledge to never drive distracted. Help us inspire others to be safe on the road — one pledge could save a life.

AT&T Invests More Than $40 Million Dollars Over 3-Year Period to Boost Local Networks in Maine

At AT&T1, we've invested more than $40 million dollars in our Maine wireless and wired networks during 2015-2017. These investments boost reliability, coverage, speed and overall performance for residents and businesses. They also improve critical services that support public safety and first responders.

In 2017, AT&T made more than 51 wireless network upgrades in Maine.

"AT&T continues our commitment to enhancing our Maine network in new and innovative ways," said Patricia Jacobs, President of AT&T – New England. "We are working closely with state and local leaders to boost capacity and speed and provide the necessary backbone for the next generation of technology."

The AT&T LTE network now covers more than 400 million people in North America. Notable Maine network enhancements in 2017 included:

  • 49 additional carriers
  • 1 new bandwidth expansions
  • 1 new transmission site

By building out our 4G LTE network, we're laying the foundation for 5G, the next advance in network technologies. We're boosting network speeds and capacity, as we continue to expand the availability of our network using the latest technology.

Since the formation of the FirstNet public-private partnership a little over a year ago, governors from all 50 states, 5 territories and D.C. recognized the value of FirstNet, joining in its mission to strengthen and modernize public safety's communications capabilities.

FirstNet is a new nationwide communications platform dedicated to America's public safety community. As we build, deploy and evolve FirstNet, we will build upon our current and planned investments in Maine to help ensure public safety's network delivers the coverage and cutting-edge capabilities first responders expect – today and for decades to come.

For the 4th year in a row, AT&T earned the top spot in the telecommunications industry on FORTUNE's Most Admired Companies list in 2018. We also placed No. 49 among the 50 most admired companies across all industries.

Join me this Veterans Day to Thank Our Heroes

Veterans Day is a day of reflection. Reflecting on our country’s past. Reflecting on where we are today. And, most importantly, reflecting on those who fought for our freedoms.

AT&T has a long history of supporting our military and First Responders. We’ve committed to hiring 20,000 veterans by the year 2020. We’re also using our talents to construct a public safety broadband network called FirstNet to connect our First Responders in new ways.

On Veterans Day and every day, we are thankful for our service members.

Connecting people to opportunity: AT&T Annual Sustainability Report

At AT&T, we are using the power of our network, our workforce and our connections to drive positive change in communities. Our successes in this effort are in large part due to our employees’ commitment to the greater good.

It’s because of this dedication that for the 3rd time in 5 years, AT&T has been named the top community-minded communications company in the U.S. by The Civic 50.

Additionally, we announced our first milestone toward our goal of enabling customer carbon savings 10x the footprint of AT&T’s operations by 2025. This update includes a methodology for measuring our impact and our first customer case study about the carbon benefits of connected shipping pallets.

Side-by-side with nonprofits, peers and customers, we are working to measure the carbon- and cost-savings enabled by our technology, so more businesses can understand how they can use technology to help improve the environment.

These stories and more are articulated in the 2016 edition of our Annual Sustainability Update and 28 associated issue briefs. The report highlights the progress our company is making through a variety of citizenship and sustainability initiatives designed to help the individuals, communities and environments that need it most.

AT&T honoring our nation’s heroes

Carry the Load

While we are grateful for our nation’s heroes every day, Memorial Day offers a national day to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

At AT&T, we know our nation’s service men and women make sacrifices to protect our country and our freedoms. It is an honor to support them, and, this year, AT&T is a proud sponsor of Carry The Load.

Carry The Load works to bring all Americans together to participate in honoring our nation’s heroes every day. This includes a national, 6,200-mile relay where veterans and citizens honor those heroes’ sacrifice and take a turn experiencing the weight of a rucksack. All of the money raised at this event goes directly to support Carry The Load’s Continuum of Care program where partner charities are on the front lines to help those heroes and their families who have given so much to this country.

In 2003, AT&T employee Matt Foster, then a soldier in the US Army, left his family, friends and future wife for an overseas deployment. His Forward Operating Base (FOB) would often go on “Comms Blackout,” usually meaning a soldier on his FOB had been killed or seriously injured and their family was being officially notified. It’s that experience that led Matt to get involved with Carry The Load.

Supporting Innovation & Sharing Highlights

We’ll also be working with state and local leaders across Maine to keep our customers — and their constituents — connected to each other and their world. Our industry is changing faster than ever, and we want to make sure public policies keep up with those changes.

Connected to Good

The new year is a perfect time to celebrate and reflect on experiences and accomplishments from the last 12 months. We focus on the communities in which we live and work across the country. Before we walk too far into 2017, we wanted to take a moment to share highlights of some of our milestones in 2016.

Mentorship Mentorship

In the Fall of 2012, AT&T set out to impact the lives of students through 1 million hours of mentoring by the end of 2016. We met that goal in January of 2016, with our employees mentoring more than 160,000 students in 336 cities.

Employee mentoring is part of AT&T Aspire, the company’s signature philanthropic initiative to promote success in school and beyond.

Ninety percent of parents want their children to have access to computer science education at school, and teachers agree. However, three-quarters of U.S. schools do not offer meaningful computer science courses.
In 2016 we continued to support organizations that focus on Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM). In April, our chairman and CEO, Randall Stephenson, joined other CEOs in signing an open letter to Congress, asking for federal funding to provide every student in every school the opportunity to learn computer science.

AT&T actively focuses on recruiting veterans into career paths because the experience and skills gained through the military are an invaluable contribution to the workforce. Last spring we announced plans to hire an additional 10,000 veterans, bringing our veteran hiring commitment to a total of 20,000 by 2020.

This commitment was announced at the White House Joining Forces event, with more than 50 other companies also dedicated to hiring and training veterans and military spouses. The hiring commitment from AT&T was one of the largest announced.

Inauguration 2017: Stars, Stripes and Selfies

Can you even begin to imagine what nearly 1 million people will look like standing on the National Mall on Inauguration Day? You can bet nearly all of these people will be holding their phones up high wanting to share the Inauguration of the country’s new President with friends and family through text messages, photos and social media. That’s a massive number of people using their smartphones in the same place at the same time. And a massive amount of demand placed on our network. There is no doubt; this is a challenge to support. But it’s a challenge we’ve been planning to take on for more than 2 years.

AT&T is investing nearly $15 million and more than quintupling network capacity throughout D.C. to boost the network for the Inauguration. We’re also making hundreds of permanent upgrades that will benefit the District for years to come, including LTE capacity upgrades to more than 20 cell sites. We’re also rolling out 7 Super Cell on Wheels (COWs) along the 2-mile National Mall, with 2 of the COWs equipped with our highest-capacity antenna — the Drum Set Antenna — providing 20 times more network capacity than a traditional cell site. This is our largest temporary network deployment ever. In total, our 7 Super COW deployment, along the National Mall, is equal to nearly 50 traditional cell sites.

2012 vs. 2016 — How has Mobile Technology Changed in 4 Years?

A lot has changed in just 4 years since the last Presidential Inauguration. Our network engineers continue to see massive mobile data growth on our network and have developed innovative technology to keep up with the demand. Since 2007, data usage on our network has grown by 250,000% — due to the rise in popularity of video streaming apps and mobile internet usage.

In 2013, during President Barack Obama’s second Inauguration, although the crowd was smaller than 2009, data usage on our D.C.-area network was more than 16 times larger than it was during Obama’s first inauguration in 2009. We expect to see even more data usage this year, as streaming video and apps (like Snapchat) have gained in popularity.

bullet pointFor the 2013 Inauguration, we deployed Cell on Wheels (COWs) to boost coverage along the National Mall, but they’re nothing like the Super COWs we have at our disposal this year. For context, one Super COW is equal to 6 COWs in 2012 and is able to provide more than 30 times network capacity.

bullet pointIn 2012, 35% of adults in the U.S. owned smartphones, compared to more than 72% in 2016. That means there will be a lot more people using social media, streaming, tweeting and snapping at this year’s Inauguration compared to 2013.

During the Inauguration, local and national network teams will watch the network closely — ready to respond quickly as needed. At AT&T, we do everything we can to make sure you’re able to share your experiences from your smartphone with others. Whether that’s streaming the Inauguration live from your desk or in person on the National Mall with a million other people.

This innovative solution harnesses the power of the AT&T network to give customers automatic fraud blocking and suspected spam call warnings.

Simply add the feature through your myAT&T account or the AT&T Call Protect app and get these benefits:

Maine employees host tech training for seniors

Employees from various AT&T retail locations in Maine came together earlier this month to help teach local senior citizens how to get the most out of their smartphones and other wireless devices. AT&T employees held one-on-one “Bring Your Own Device” training sessions at the SeniorsPlus Education Center in Lewiston, where they walked residents through anything from adding shortcuts to their smartphones to installing and setting up video-chatting apps to stay in touch with their families during the holiday season.

The event was highlighted in a great feature segment on Maine’s local ABC affiliate.

On Oct. 30, AT&T launched a new documentary that tells incredible stories about people who are on the front lines of social change in the United States. The AT&T original documentary RESOLUTION is focused on innovative thinking about disability and showcases 4 compelling organizations that are making a meaningful difference in the lives of people with disabilities.

RESOLUTION: Innovative Thinking about Disability follows the leaders of each of the featured organizations across the country — from Washington, D.C., to Plano, Texas — as they work to help make a difference in the lives of others. Viewers meet Pete Scott, a veteran Counterintelligence Agent, who served in the United States Army for 12 years and is now serving other veterans with disabilities through his nonprofit, Fields 4 Valor. They also met the organization that inspired and supported Pete in making that happen, Dog Tag, Inc. Viewers were also introduced to Brittany Déjean, whose father’s experience with quadriplegia led her to create AbleThrive, an online platform that curates content to support people with disabilities, and to AT&T partner LaunchAbility, which has helped place employees at our corporate offices.

Man on phoneRobocalls are currently the largest source of consumer complaints at the FCC and the FTC, the agencies charged with enforcing the “Do Not Call” list. Robocallers who intentionally ignore the Do Not Call list disrupt dinner, interrupt family time and provide a persistent source of annoyance to consumers everywhere. These robocallers use technology to evade existing tools designed to screen unwanted and illegal calls.

AT&T and others in the industry have been working to address this issue. Our CEO, Randall Stephenson, has agreed to lead an industry-wide Robocalling Strike Force, focused on accelerating the development and deployment of new tools for fighting this troubling problem.

AT&T Sustainability Update

10,000 veterans hired$119.1 million in energy savings$317 million invested in Aspire
By end of 2015, AT&T hired more than 10,000 veterans, achieving our 2013 commitment. In 2016, we pledged to hire an additional 10,000 veterans by 2020.$119.1 million realized in annualized energy savings from 15,050 energy projects.$317 million invested through AT&T Aspire since 2008 toward a $350 million commitment to education.

AT&T’s workforce is 33% women and 42% people of color. 5.9 million gallons of unleaded gasoline avoided in 2015 through use of 11,257 Alternative Fuel Vehicles (AFVs).$156.6 million contributed through corporate, employee, social investment and AT&T Foundation programs in 2015.

AT&T Maine Stands with Orlando

In the wake of the tragic event against the LGBT community in Orlando on June 12, AT&T is dedicated to showing our support.


AT&T wireless customers can text “Orlando” to 20222 to donate $10 to ORMC’s (Orlando Regional Medical Center) Level One Trauma Center to help with ongoing medical support needs. No text message fees apply.

The Orlando community and the Orlando Level One Trauma Center will continue to be in our thoughts.

The donation will appear on your wireless bill, or be deducted from your prepaid balance.

As we approach Memorial Day, we remember that it is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by our fallen service members and their families. While we can never repay the great price paid by these individuals, we can definitely honor them.

Please join me in taking a moment this Memorial Day to be thankful to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
