TAYLOR, Mich., Feb. 3, 2018 — AT&T is committed to supporting Michigan communities. By contributing $100,000 to Team Rubicon in Michigan, AT&T is launching the organization’s capabilities in the Detroit area to respond to disasters across the state. In fact, volunteers are training today to be prepared to assist in the aftermath of a flood or tornado.

Team Rubicon is a non-profit disaster response organization that unites the skills and experiences of volunteers, who are primarily military veterans, with first responders and trained volunteers. It rapidly deploys disaster response teams when needed, free of charge to communities they serve, and supports the ongoing work to maintain and rebuild the communities. Team Rubicon currently maintains a roster of nearly 70,000 volunteers located throughout the United States. Currently there are more than 1,000 in Michigan, with a goal to reach nearly 10,000.

At today’s event in Taylor, AT&T will deliver a check for $100,000 to support Team Rubicon efforts in Michigan and volunteers will get training on repairing roofs and interior walls in preparation of helping rebuild homes in the event of a flood or tornado.

"Team Rubicon's commitment to the Detroit area is fantastic news for both our local veterans and communities around the country that will invariably need the invaluable service they provide," said Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon. "This organization is giving our veterans an amazing opportunity to reengage around a mission that is truly worthy of their skills and talents —helping others in need."

AT&T’s contribution is part of a $1 million commitment to fund recruitment, training and support for new volunteers for new crisis readiness units around the country. This investment will enable Team Rubicon to immediately respond to disasters, like when Team Rubicon volunteers served those impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.

“It’s hard to imagine an organization more deserving our support than Team Rubicon,” said Robert Jones, regional director of external affairs for AT&T Michigan. “The work they do combining the skills and experience of our veterans interested in continuing to serve their communities with first responders and the ever-present demand for assistance in areas affected by natural disasters is brilliant union between resources and need, and also just an extraordinarily noble cause.”

While Team Rubicon’s primary mission is providing relief to those affected by disasters, the organization also seeks to provide our veterans with three things they lose after leaving the military: a purpose, gained through disaster response; community, built by serving with others; and identity, created by joining a new mission.

"We are excited to announce our partnership with AT&T here in Detroit. With their support we will be able to better recruit, train, and equip military veterans, first responders, and service minded members to help us build more resilient cities,” said Team Rubicon’s Midwest Deputy Director, Mike Watkins. “It's partners like this that allow us to continue our mission; we are both humbled and grateful for their support."
