Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce Receives $5,000 AT&T Contribution to Support Career Exploration Programs for High School Students

Donation from AT&T Announced During Career Exploration Fair at Oshkosh West

The Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce received a $5,000 AT&T contribution today to support its career exploration programs for local high school students during an event at Oshkosh West High School.

The Oshkosh Chamber works in partnership with the local high schools to manage and coordinate the annual fall Interviewathon & Career Exploration program for juniors at Oshkosh West and Oshkosh North High Schools.  The purpose of the program is to educate students on the skills needed for future employment, as well as assist them in determining which careers they would be interested in.  About 750 students are expected to participate in this year’s program between the two high schools.

“Through this program, our mission is to help our area high school students explore potential careers and gain the skills and knowledge they need for future employment,” said John Casper, CEO of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce.  “We are grateful to receive this contribution from AT&T to support our career exploration program.”

Over several months, students in the program are led through a curriculum that includes how to dress, timeliness, resume building, using resources to research potential employers, and more.  Students role-play a variety of careers with one another and with volunteers from the local business community so they can have a first-hand experience of different careers.  They also participate in “skills and interests: quizzes throughout the program to help them determine what careers best match with their passions and interests.

“AT&T is proud to support the efforts of the Oshkosh Chamber and local high schools to prepare students for future careers,” said Scott T. VanderSanden, president of AT&T Wisconsin.  “As a company, we are committed to education and workforce development, and this program is a great way to support both.”

The final phase of the program is a one-day Interviewathon where area businesses and non-profit organizations are invited to participate and allow students to put their skills to action.

In the past three years of the program, area employers and non-profits have also benefited by finding new employees and volunteers.  Successful recruiters have utilized this as their first interview and in some cases, have hired students on the spot.  Employers are also asked to provide students with feedback on their interviewing skills, with many students gaining employment.

“This program is a great way for students to not only explore potential careers, but also gain the interview skills they need to get that first job,” said State Senator Dan Feyen.  “I commend the Oshkosh Chamber for partnering with our local high schools to help prepare our young people for the workforce.”

The mission of the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce Foundation is to promote and advance educational, economic and workforce development through a partnership of business and educational representatives.  To learn more, please visit: https://www.oshkoshchamber.com/
